Default Wow.....I'm so glad I found this site!!!!

One of my twins was born with torticollis. His name is Joshua and he is 9 months old. By the time we noticed Joshua's torticollis he was about 4 months old. By this time his head shape was pretty bad. The doctor just kept telling me that his head would reshape on his own. I tried the repositioning but it seemed to be painful for him to turn his head. After going through PT for a few weeks his range of motion in his neck got better, but the head shape just grew worse because he still favored that side as he slept. After a few months of complaining to the ped. she finally sent us to a Otolaryngology Specialist. When I mentioned the helmet therapy to the specialist she couldn't have agreed more. We began our journey! I fought with the insurance company for about a month before finally getting the helmet approved. Joshua was 8 months old (6 months adjusted) when he got his helmet. After wearing the helmet for about a week He developed a sore on his head that got infected. I was told my his ped. to leave the helmet off until it healed completely. It took a long 3 weeks before this happened. He just started wearing the helmet again yesterday. It appears that his head grew a bit since the last time wearing it. He cries allot with it on, sweats like crazy and it leaves red marks all over his poor little head. I feel so bad! I've even gotten to the point of not wanting to put it on him. I am praying that this will work for him. He is wearing the hanger band which I believe is a bit different, but I am going to try this as soon as I get home from work. Thank you sooooo much for sharing this info!!!! I will keep you all posted.

This is a great idea. Quick question - does this reduce or interfere with the functionality of the helmet.

Thanks! We didn't find that it interfered with the functionality of the helmet in any way. Infact, it allowed us to get Abby's helmet back on her while her dermatitis continued healing. Without the cap we would have had to keep the helmet off her longer while her skin completely healed and because she had sensitive skin, additional skin problems could have developed. That would have cost us precious helmet time and may have delayed her progress.

To SyracuseMommy...
I'm so sorry you and Joshua had to deal with an infected sore. I know how miserable that can be. I hope the cap will bring some relief and maybe prevent future skin irritations. We used Hanger but I agree that the band is probably different than the helmet we had. Three weeks seems like a long time out of the helmet without an adjustment. Has your orthotist checked the fit since his head has grown? If it's not fitting properly and especially if there are pressure points getting red, more skin problems may develop. I hope the cap helps make your little one more comfortable. Hang in there...it does get better.

Abby'sMom

We did go back in for an adjustment before putting the helmet back on his head. His head did grow quite a bit in the 3 weeks. I'm almost worried that he will grow out of the helmet by the time he turns 1 which is in August. This will be a problem because we went through hell getting it approved the first time. One good thing is that when they did the adjustment they measured and the flat part of his head grew and the part that sticks out got smaller! That's without having the helmet on, so that gave me some faith. I tried the cap and it def seemed to be a little more comfy for him, and it even looked more comfy. His little eyes didn't like so squished, and he wasn't so sweaty after taking it off. The biggest problem I am having now, is that I can't get him to sleep with it on. I tried and he tosses and turns and wakes up crying at least every hour. I feel like I just can't win!

This might be a silly question, but what if your son has a huge head that doesn't fit any of those caps, when you cut it apart, do they fit any size ? :) I would love to eliminate some of the sweat for the little guy and the smell for us, he reminds me of hockey dressing rooms from my childhood! :)
